Say "Corkage Fee" Instead of "콜키지"


The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language recommended on the 5th that the terms 'corkage' and 'cork charge' be replaced with the Korean term '주류 반입비' (alcohol bringing-in fee). They also suggested '건강 노년맞이' (healthy aging) and '체험 전시실' (experience showroom) as Korean alternatives for 'well-aging' and 'showroom,' respectively.


Corkage and cork charge refer to the fees charged by hotels or restaurants for allowing customers to consume alcohol they bring themselves. The alternative term '주류 반입비' was selected based on survey results. In a public acceptance survey conducted from the 29th to the 31st of last month with about 1,000 participants, 97% of respondents answered that the term was appropriate.


Well-aging refers to accepting aging as a natural process and pursuing physical and mental health while growing older. A showroom is a place where various products are displayed and exhibited for experiencing in order to promote specific products or companies. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language decided on the alternatives '건강 노년맞이' and '체험 전시실' at the New Words Meeting held from the 26th to the 28th of last month.


The New Words Meeting is a committee that provides Korean alternative terms easily understood by the general public before difficult foreign neologisms spread. Experts from various fields such as Korean language, foreign languages, education, publicity and publishing, information and communication, and media participate. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language plan to continuously promote the use of these alternatives, led by government ministries and media outlets.
