[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hyowon] IA, a specialized company in automotive semiconductors and modules, is on the rise. This is interpreted as being influenced by the government's announcement to actively foster next-generation power semiconductors, which are core components used in artificial intelligence (AI) and electric vehicles.
As of 9:57 AM on the 2nd, IA is trading at 1,575 KRW, up 7.14% from the previous day.
The government held the 7th Innovation Growth Big 3 Promotion Meeting the previous day and announced the "Next-Generation Power Semiconductor Technology Development and Production Capacity Expansion Plan." To secure global-level competitiveness by 2025, it will actively support the development of commercialized products, strengthening of foundational technologies, and securing future manufacturing processes.
Power semiconductors are semiconductors that perform power conversion, voltage transformation, stabilization, distribution, and control. Next-generation power semiconductors refer to semiconductors made from three major new material wafers with excellent silicon (Si) power efficiency and durability.
The government will discover projects linked with domestic demand companies and develop more than five commercialized next-generation power semiconductor products. It will develop application technologies for the three major new materials?silicon carbide (SiC), gallium nitride (GaN), and gallium oxide (Ga2O3)?which overcome the limitations of existing silicon materials, and also support domestic companies in securing material and wafer technologies.
IA’s subsidiary, Trinotechnology, has succeeded in developing domestic technology for silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors. Using Trinotechnology’s power semiconductor products for component localization can reduce costs to about one-third compared to foreign products. IA and Trinotechnology have established a joint venture with the Zhangjiagang municipal government in China for power semiconductor development and production and are conducting joint business.
