[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won will attend the 2021 Boao Forum held in Hainan, China, from the 18th to the 21st online.
According to the business community on the 2nd, Chairman Chey was invited as a speaker to the annual meeting of the Boao Forum, known as the "Asian Davos Forum." This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Boao Forum. The theme of this year's Boao Forum, held for the first time in two years due to COVID-19, is "The Era of Great Global Change." The main agenda includes "Understanding China," "Grasping Changes in the Global Situation," "Belt and Road Cooperation," "Embracing Industrial Transformation," "Adopting New Technologies," and "Sharing Development," with both online and offline events held this year.
Chairman Chey has solidified his global network by attending the World Economic Forum (Davos Forum) and the Boao Forum annually. He will attend this forum in his capacity as SK Group Chairman.
This year, Chairman Chey is expected to emphasize the necessity of social value and the strengthening of global cooperation. At the 2019 Boao Forum, he stated, "Social value is as important as economic value," and stressed, "Efforts should focus on two things: measuring social value and providing incentives for the social value created."
Last year, when the spread of COVID-19 was severe, he attended the Shanghai Forum, Tokyo Forum, and Beijing Forum online, saying, "To overcome environmental and social crises, we must initiate fundamental changes centered on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and strengthen global cooperation."
Upon his inauguration as chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Chairman Chey also reiterated, "ESG has been a global trend for several years," and added, "I hope people do not see it as regulation but as an opportunity to open new business possibilities."
A business community official said, "In the changes such as low growth and industrial restructuring after COVID-19, the policy recommendations of economic organizations are becoming stronger," and added, "We hope that the presence of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry will grow, supported by Chairman Chey's global network, which continuously emphasizes social value and ESG."
