Jeong Seok-woong, Jeonnam Superintendent of Education, Urges Correction of Dokdo Distortion in Japanese Textbooks Jang Seok-woong, Superintendent of Education of Jeonnam

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jun-kyung] Jang Seok-woong, Superintendent of Education of Jeonnam, on the 1st, regarding the announcement of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan’s approval results for high school social studies textbooks containing claims of sovereignty over Dokdo, urged correction by stating, “Japan’s approval of history-distorting textbooks must be immediately revoked.”

Superintendent Jang emphasized, “We strongly condemn the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan for its groundless claims in high school social studies textbooks that Dokdo, Korean territory, is ‘Japan’s inherent territory’ and ‘illegally occupied by Korea.’ Dokdo is clearly our territory historically, geographically, and under international law.”

He continued, “Japan must stop further historical distortion and provide accurate history education based on historical facts so that students who will lead Japan’s future can grow into true democratic citizens of the international community.”

Meanwhile, the Jeonnam Office of Education plans to strengthen Dokdo education through the enactment of the ‘Dokdo Education Reinforcement Ordinance’ this year by distributing Dokdo educational materials, utilizing the Dokdo Experience Center for education, and operating Dokdo Guardian Schools, ensuring that Dokdo education is substantively implemented within the school curriculum.
