Installation of Smart Security Lights in Nanggok-dong and Nanhyang-dong, Gwanak-gu to Create Safer Night Streets Security light equipped with a bidirectional flasher

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) has completed the installation of IoT (Internet of Things) technology-based two-way flashing devices on 223 security lights within the district.

This project, conducted through the Gwanak-gu resident participatory budget, was pilot-installed targeting elementary school commuting routes and dark alleys in residential areas around Nangok-dong and Nanhyang-dong.

The two-way flashing security lights are wireless flashers that can be directly controlled via IoT modems embedded in the flashers through a central control system (mobile). The system allows administrators to monitor power outages, leakage, abnormal lighting, and other statuses in real time.

This improves upon the existing method of identifying malfunctions through complaint reports or self-inspections, minimizing the period of malfunctioning lights through real-time monitoring, thereby greatly enhancing residents' convenience.

The district will continuously monitor the project’s effectiveness and plans to expand and install the system throughout the entire Gwanak-gu area in the future.

Meanwhile, the district is investing a total budget of 950 million KRW this year to thoroughly maintain and repair 11,906 security lights in the area by the end of the year, and to additionally install 400 new security lights and 300 CCTV-combined security light flashers.

In particular, the CCTV-combined security light flashers will be installed at 300 locations including crime-vulnerable areas, women’s safe return paths, and illegal garbage dumping control zones. These are expected to be highly effective in preventing various crimes and safety accidents occurring in narrow alleys and blind spots where installing CCTV poles is limited.

Park Jun-hee, Mayor of Gwanak-gu, stated, “By utilizing 4th industrial revolution technologies in the road lighting system, we will eliminate lighting blind spots and create a pleasant and bright walking environment even at night.” He added, “We will continue to prioritize the convenience and safety of residents to make Gwanak-gu a place where everyone can live with peace of mind.”
