[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] Major foreign media reported on the 31st that Google has decided to donate 25 million dollars (about 28.32 billion won) to the European Media Information Fund (EMIF), established to combat fake news.
EMIF was launched last week, led by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the European University Institute (EUI). It plans to gather non-profit organizations, researchers, and fact-checking activists supporting the fight against fake news.
The project "European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO)," established last year by the European Commission, evaluates and selects the projects.
The duration of EMIF is five years.
Amid criticism that IT companies are not properly responding to online misinformation, Google's decision to donate to EMIF draws attention. Google's executive Matt Brittin said, "As we navigated uncertainties and challenges last year, it has become more important than ever for people to access accurate information and distinguish fact from fiction."
