Car Windows as 'Screens'... Hyundai Mobis Unveils Concept Cars M.Vision X and POP

[Asia Economy Yongin=Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] Hyundai Mobis unveiled its new concept mobility car, the 'M.Vision X·POP.'

On the 31st, Hyundai Mobis revealed the M.Vision X and M.Vision POP, urban shared mobility concept cars, at the 'Future Strategy and New Technology Presentation Conference' held at its technology research center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.

The M.Vision X is a purpose-built four-seater mobility vehicle that offers a customized user experience based on a unique interpretation of interior space. The 'X' in M.Vision X stands for expansion, experience, and expedition in communication.

The M.Vision X transforms its car windows into displays called Virtual Space Walls that can create special themes, allowing the entire 360-degree transparent glass to be used as screens for watching sports games or performances.

Additionally, the displays inside the M.Vision X can be individually controlled. Multiple TV screens are attached to the vehicle windows, enabling each passenger to choose different views such as scenery or movies. The interior seats are also designed to be reversible, allowing passengers to sit facing either direction depending on their purpose.

Notably, the core feature of the M.Vision X is the square-shaped 'Vertical Cockpit' located in the center of the interior. This integrated center cockpit, composed of 28-inch displays on each side, communicates with passengers through a contactless gesture recognition system. Passengers can control all driving-related functions such as autonomous driving mode, AI speakers, and infotainment via this Vertical Cockpit. It also has a sterilization function using UV lighting that automatically disinfects the cabin when passengers exit.

When the reporter entered the M.Vision X vehicle following guidance, the windows displayed a welcome message instead of the outside view, and music played along with vivid background images controlled by a researcher’s smartphone. As explained by Hyundai Mobis, the reporter was able to select the outside scenery instead of the vivid video from the seat.

The M.Vision POP is an electric micro-mobility vehicle developed under the theme of 'TECH JOY.' Its core solution is 'Phovility,' a combination of Phone and Mobility. It introduces the concept of docking a smartphone with the steering wheel, allowing the vehicle to be controlled via the smartphone.

Accordingly, the smartphone mounted on the steering wheel itself becomes the car cockpit. At the site, the M.Vision POP cockpit consisted only of a display and steering wheel. The smartphone’s navigation screen was linked directly to the vehicle’s front display, and user recognition and voice recognition functions were also available. Wireless steering using smartphone sensors was demonstrated.

Moreover, the M.Vision POP is equipped with an e-corner module, enabling each of the vehicle’s four wheels to rotate up to 180 degrees. The e-corner module integrates driving, braking, steering, and suspension systems within each wheel, representing next-generation technology. This allows for 'crab driving,' moving sideways like a crab, and '360-degree rotation.' The company explained that this technology also makes parallel parking easier.

In addition, Hyundai Mobis unveiled its next-generation integrated cockpit system (M.VICS) for the first time. This integrated cockpit condenses core technologies such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), biometric recognition, and blooming sound into a production-ready next-generation system. Cheon Jae-seung, head of Hyundai Mobis’s Basic Advanced Lab (Executive Director), said, "In the post-COVID era, we contemplated how to elevate the changed human lifestyle into new mobility technology. The new platform embodies a spirit of technical exploration that allows people to share their hearts and enjoy everyday pleasures."

Cheon also commented on the commercialization timeline for the M.Vision X and POP, stating, "We plan to commercialize the M.Vision POP within five years. The M.Vision X will be developed further based on technology to align with the era of full autonomous driving."
