"Video Performance Improvement" Canon Releases New Firmware Update for EOS R5 and More

[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Canon announced on the 31st that it has released new firmware update versions for the full-frame mirrorless cameras ‘EOS R5’, ‘EOS R6’, and the flagship DSLR ‘EOS-1D X Mark III’, offering various features including upgraded video performance.

The firmware update targets three models in total: the full-frame mirrorless EOS R5, EOS R6, and the flagship DSLR camera EOS-1D X Mark III. Through this firmware update, these models will be upgraded in various aspects including video performance, communication, and convenience features. The new firmware can be downloaded from the customer support page on the official Canon Korea Consumer Imaging website.

This firmware update enhances video shooting and editing performance for the models. First, the EOS R5 now supports ‘Canon Log 3’, which is available on higher-end professional video cameras such as Cinema EOS cameras.

Canon Log 3 allows video creation with simple grading at the level of adjusting gradation, making it as easy to process as Canon Log while offering a wider dynamic range than Canon Log. It has the same LUT values as the Cinema gamma curve and maintains a wide dynamic range of about 14 stops at 10-bit without gradation loss by tightening shadows. It is especially characterized by achieving low noise in shadow areas, broadening the scope of video expression.

The EOS R5 has added C-log3 shooting functionality in the Canon Log settings. It also supports high-speed frame rate video shooting at 120p and 100p in FHD, enabling free color expression and dynamic video. Canon plans to support Canon Log 3 on the EOS-1D X Mark III and EOS R6 models in the future.

Additionally, through Canon Log 3, when 8K footage shot with the EOS R5 is oversampled to 6K or 4K resolution, high-quality free color expression is possible, and high-resolution still images of approximately 35.4 million pixels can be easily extracted from 8K RAW footage. The EOS R5 also supports high-speed frame rate video shooting at 120p/100p in FHD, allowing for more dynamic video expression. Canon plans to support Canon Log 3 on the EOS-1D X Mark III and EOS R6 models in the future.

A low bit rate mode is added when using RAW and IPB at all resolutions and frame rates. This compresses high-quality video into a smaller file size for efficient recording and storage, providing an option for users who prioritize storage efficiency.

Along with this, autofocus functions, communication, and convenience features have been improved in various ways. An electronic full-time manual focus (MF) function has been added, allowing manual focus adjustment by operating the focus ring in still image and servo AF modes. During FTP (File Transfer Protocol) transmission, the remaining time is displayed on the camera, and failed or untransmitted protected images can be sent in bulk. Camera settings can be saved to a memory card from the function settings tab in the menu, making it easy to load user settings, and a feature to keep the rear LCD screen off during shooting has been added to maximize battery efficiency.
