[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A monkey that has gained more than three times the average weight of other monkeys by eating food given by people is attracting attention.
According to UPI and others on the 26th, a monkey named 'Gojilla' raised at Minburi Market in Bangkok, Thailand, weighs 27kg. Gojilla, who is 3 years old, is extremely obese, weighing about three times more than the average weight of 8kg for monkeys of the same age.
Gojilla started gaining weight by receiving watermelons, corn, junk food, and carbonated drinks from many tourists visiting the Minburi Fish Market. Because of this, he was also nicknamed "Fat Uncle."
Mr. Manop, who took in and is raising Gojilla after he was abandoned by his owner when he was young, explained, "When Gojilla was kept at home, he would scream and get stressed, so I brought him to the street stall to stay with me. Since he has been fed by people from a young age, he cannot find food on his own like a wild monkey."
Gojilla's body is tied with a rope, so he can hardly exercise. Because of this, some netizens are concerned about Gojilla's health and criticize the people who caused him to become so obese.
As the controversy grew, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) in Thailand has taken Gojilla into quarantine for protection. Recently, Gojilla has started a diet focused on vegetables and low-fat protein.
Supakan Kaewchot, a veterinarian affiliated with the authorities, said, "People gave the monkey food that it should not have eaten. This was something that could have been prevented. It takes a considerable amount of time to reduce the weight by 2 to 3 kg. Still, weight loss is necessary to lower the risk of diabetes and heart disease."
