[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] LG Group announced on the 26th that it will participate in 'Earth Hour,' the world's largest global lights-off campaign for the environment.
Earth Hour is the world's largest climate crisis response campaign organized by the non-profit nature conservation organization, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Since 2007, every year on the last Saturday of March, from 8:30 PM for one hour, participants turn off their lights to share the seriousness of climate change and contribute to energy saving and carbon emission reduction.
This year marks the 15th event, and LG will conduct lights-off events at 20 nationwide offices and business sites, including the Yeouido LG Twin Towers, ▲LG Gwanghwamun Building ▲LG Seoul Station Building ▲Magok LG Science Park ▲Yongsan LG Uplus Headquarters ▲Sangam LG HelloVision Headquarters.
An LG official stated, "We joined this campaign to empathize with the seriousness of climate change and to strengthen our commitment to reducing carbon emissions," adding, "LG will continue to actively respond to international environmental regulations and also focus on developing eco-friendly products and technologies."
LG affiliates are accelerating the realization of carbon neutrality as part of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management. Carbon neutrality means balancing the amount of carbon emitted by a company with the amount absorbed or removed, effectively making the net carbon emissions '0.'
LG Electronics plans to reduce carbon emissions generated during the product manufacturing stage by 50% compared to 2017 by 2030, while achieving carbon neutrality through carbon credits acquired from external carbon reduction activities.
LG Chem announced plans to switch 100% of the electricity used at all its global business sites to renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, becoming the first domestic company to do so in response to climate change, and aims to limit carbon emissions to 10 million tons in 2050, the same level as in 2019.
LG Energy Solution currently uses 100% renewable energy for power consumed in battery production at its plants in Poland and the United States, and plans to expand this transition to its plants in Ochang and Nanjing, China by 2025.
