All Deceased Were Subcontract Workers... Inspection of Headquarters' Safety Measures Implementation
Construction Companies with Consecutive Major Accidents in 2019 and 2020
Will Be Supervised if an Incident Occurs Even Once This Year... Taeyoung Construction First Case
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The Ministry of Employment and Labor has begun inspections of Taeyoung Construction headquarters and construction sites nationwide following a series of worker fatality accidents this year. Serious accidents occurred in 2019 and last year, and with another accident this year, the ministry initiated the inspections. Taeyoung Construction is the first company to be inspected under this principle.
On the 22nd, the Ministry of Employment and Labor announced that it would start industrial safety and health inspections targeting Taeyoung Construction headquarters and construction sites nationwide. In January, a worker died in an accident at a construction site in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province, and in February, another worker died at a nearby construction site. Then, on the 19th of this month, a worker died in an accident at a Taeyoung Construction site in Guri, Gyeonggi Province. Fatal worker accidents have occurred every month this year. Worker fatalities also occurred at Taeyoung Construction in 2019 and last year. Because of this, the ministry judged that there may be problems with the overall safety management system at the headquarters level due to the recent consecutive fatal accidents at Taeyoung Construction sites and began inspections.
In early last month, the Ministry of Employment and Labor announced that for construction companies with consecutive serious accidents such as worker fatalities in 2019 and last year, if even one serious accident occurs this year, inspections of both the headquarters and nationwide construction sites will be conducted simultaneously. Taeyoung Construction is the first case to which this policy has been applied. In particular, considering that all workers who died in accidents at Taeyoung Construction sites this year belonged to subcontractors, the ministry plans to focus on checking whether the headquarters properly implemented safety measures for subcontracted workers. The ministry will conduct unannounced visits to Taeyoung Construction sites to verify compliance with key safety rules such as wearing protective gear and will respond strictly with legal actions if violations are found.
Meanwhile, the ministry immediately suspended all work at the Taeyoung Construction site in Guri, where a worker fatality occurred this month, and plans to conduct a special inspection led by the Central Regional Employment and Labor Office.
