[Asia Economy Reporter No Woo-rae] "This year's goal is Rookie of the Year."
Jeong Se-bin (20, Samchully) expresses her bold ambition. Last year, she secured her spot for the 2021 regular season on the Korean Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA) Tour by consistently finishing in the top 10 eight times out of 12 events on the KLPGA Dream (2nd tier) Tour, ranking 5th in prize money with 62.48 million KRW. "I want to consistently qualify for the main events this year and definitely win the Rookie of the Year award," she said with a smile, "I will work hard to show a great performance on the field, so I ask for lots of support."
She is a top prospect who achieved everything from joining as a KLPGA associate member last year to becoming a full member and entering the 1st tier tour. She started golf in the 3rd grade of elementary school at the recommendation of a friend of her father who runs an indoor golf center, and won a national tournament in her 8th year of playing. She was recognized for her potential by being selected for the national training squad. In April last year, she became a KLPGA associate member as the 2nd ranked recommended female high school player by the Korea Middle and High School Golf Federation in 2019.
After her professional debut in June, she placed 3rd in the first round of the Grand-Samdaein Jump (3rd tier) Tour. She then won the 2nd Jump Tour event, finished 4th in the 3rd, and 2nd in the 4th, achieving four consecutive top 5 finishes in one month. In June, she was promoted to full membership and moved to the Dream (2nd tier) Tour. After warming up with a tie for 14th place in the 9th West Ocean CC event, the first Dream Tour tournament in September, she completed a bogey-free victory at the 10th Gunsan CC event.
Despite joining the Dream Tour mid-season, she demonstrated strong performance by finishing 5th in prize money. This is why she receives solid support from Samchully, a comprehensive energy company. She has a strong heart that rarely wavers. She ranks 1st in Dream Tour top 10 finish rate (66.67%), 3rd in average score (69.76 strokes), 4th in greens in regulation (84.48%), 32nd in average putts (30.72), and shows good iron shots and putting. She recently completed training camp with her Samchully Golf Team teammates in Goseong, Gyeongnam.
To prepare for the regular tour, which has longer courses than the Jump or Dream Tours, she focused on increasing her driving distance. "I prepared to increase my driving distance by more than 10 meters compared to now," she explained. Her role model is the ‘Golf Empress’ Park In-bi (33, KB Financial Group). "I want to emulate Park In-bi’s unwavering mental strength," she said confidently, "and show a great performance to golf fans." She will make her first appearance at the season opener, the Lotte Rent-a-Car Women’s Open, starting on the 8th of next month.
