[Asia Economy Reporter Kum Boryeong] Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People’s Party, stated that if he becomes the mayor of Seoul in next month’s by-election, he will pursue a merger with the People Power Party.

On the 16th at the National Assembly, Ahn said, “I will become the unified opposition candidate and form an integrated election committee with the People Power Party to lay the practical foundation for a grand opposition unity,” adding, “If I become the mayor of Seoul, I will seek to merge with the People Power Party with the support of the People’s Party members.”

Ahn emphasized, “Based on the foundation of the two-party merger, I will promote a three-step grand opposition unity to establish a foothold for regime change,” and added, “This is a promise I make to the people, but I also believe it is a mandate that the era gives to the entire opposition.”

He also called the rumors that he would take a different path in the third zone with former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl “fake news.” He said, “It is outrageous that stories about me taking a different path in the third zone with former Prosecutor General Yoon publicly circulate if I become mayor of Seoul,” and stressed, “Someone has been continuously spreading such fake news behind the scenes to harass me.”

Ahn asked Seoul citizens for their support. He appealed, “Since the candidate must be someone who will not be shaken by any schemes from the ruling party, please choose me, who is clean and flawless,” and said, “Ahn Cheol-soo’s victory is a victory for the entire opposition. It is the starting point for uniting all those who wish for regime change. You can trust and choose Ahn Cheol-soo without any doubt.”
