BTS Fails to Win Grammy Award (Comprehensive)

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] BTS's Grammy Award win did not materialize.

The Recording Academy, which hosts the Grammys, announced on the 14th (local time) at the 63rd Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony (pre-ceremony) that the winner of the 'Best Pop Duo/Group Performance' category was Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande's "Rain on Me."

BTS was nominated in this category for their digital single "Dynamite," released in August last year.

Other contenders included J Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny & Tainy’s "Un Dia," Justin Bieber & Quavo’s "Intentions," and Taylor Swift & Bon Iver’s "Exile."

The 'Best Pop Duo/Group Performance' is one of the pop genre award categories at the Grammys, given to musicians who achieve outstanding artistic accomplishment in pop vocal or instrumental performances in duo, group, or collaboration formats.

"Dynamite," a reinterpretation of disco, was a mega-hit that led BTS's global popularity last year and topped the Billboard singles chart for three weeks.

This was the first time a Korean pop artist was nominated for the prestigious Grammy Awards, and also the first time an Asian artist was nominated in the 'Best Pop Duo/Group Performance' category, which has been awarded since 2012.

The winning song "Rain on Me" is a dance-pop track pre-released from Lady Gaga’s sixth studio album "Chromatica," released in May last year. It debuted at number one on the Billboard main singles chart and was selected as one of the best songs of 2020 by Billboard staff.

Grammy winners and nominees are selected through voting by members of the Recording Academy, which consists of music professionals such as singers, producers, recording engineers, and critics.

BTS will present a solo stage for the first time as a Korean artist at the main Grammy Awards ceremony starting at 9 a.m. Korean time on the 15th. The performance was pre-recorded in Korea.
