Accelerating the Development of Nowon Bio-Medical Complex

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) held the ‘Nowon Bio Advisory Meeting’ on the 8th, marking the start of activities to successfully establish the bio medical complex (SN-BMC) on the site of the Changdong Vehicle Depot relocation.

The ‘Nowon Bio Policy Advisory Group,’ launched in May last year, consists of 11 experts from related fields: 3 in bio policy, 3 in future medical care, 3 in bio industry, and 2 in innovation clusters.

These advisors are responsible for proposing and advising on concrete implementation plans based on the concept of the Seoul Nowon Bio Medical Complex (SN-BMC) promoted by Nowon-gu and Seoul City.

The Seoul Nowon Bio Medical Complex (SN-BMC) is planned to be built on a 250,000㎡ (75,000 pyeong) site including the Changdong Vehicle Depot, which is confirmed to be relocated to Namyangju.

The vision of Nowon-gu and Seoul City is to establish a bio medical industry ecosystem by attracting world-class research hospitals, related companies, and R&D research institutes.

To this end, Seoul City is currently conducting the ‘Seoul Biomedical Cluster Development and Attraction Strategy Study,’ and plans to announce the master plan for the Seoul Nowon Bio Medical Complex (SN-BMC) in the second half of this year.

The advisory meeting on this day served as a forum to discuss the overall project for establishing the bio medical complex, covering topics such as plans for the core anchor facilities including the Big Data Center and Clinical Validation Center, progress in attracting major domestic hospitals, and cooperation strategies with the government.

A lecture was also held under the theme ‘Completing the Global Economic Capital through the Establishment of the Seoul Bio Health Cluster.’

Shin Sang-do, Director of Planning and Coordination at Seoul National University Hospital, said, “The K-BIO industry is the next-generation growth engine of the Republic of Korea,” adding, “For the successful establishment of SN-BMC, it should be promoted in a way that creates synergy through mutual cooperation with six world-class university hospitals located in Gangbuk, including Seoul National University Hospital, Korea University Hospital, and Kyung Hee Medical Center.”

During the advisory and discussion session, in-depth discussions were held on sharing and utilizing big data, establishing linkage and win-win development strategies with the Hongneung Bio Complex, and other related topics.

Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “Although the Seoul Nowon Bio Medical Complex project is progressing slowly, it is gradually gaining momentum,” and added, “We will steadily push forward the project based on the valuable advice provided by the advisory committee members.”
