[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 7th that it will provide high-performance computing resources necessary for artificial intelligence (AI) development to 1,000 companies and institutions.
High-performance computing resources process large amounts of data at high speed, which is essential for AI development. This can significantly shorten the AI development period. However, building high-performance computing infrastructure is costly, making it difficult for startups, universities, and institutions to install.
The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to support a total of 30.6 PF (petaflops) of high-performance computing resources to 1,000 companies and institutions. Flops (floating point operations per second) is a unit that measures one addition operation per second, and petaflops indicate that a computer can perform one quadrillion operations per second.
This year, Naver Cloud was selected as the supplier for the high-performance computing support project, and support will be provided on an ongoing basis throughout the year. Selected companies and institutions can request computing resources according to the required capacity, and usage will be monitored monthly to adjust computing capacity based on actual usage.
