[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Juhyung] Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) has requested a police investigation into a man who urinated on a subway seat on Line 1, citing violations of the Railroad Safety Act and other laws. The incident came to light after a netizen posted a video on an online community, sparking public outrage.

KORAIL announced on the 5th that it has referred the passenger who urinated in a Line 1 train car to the Railroad Judicial Police for investigation on charges of violating the Railroad Safety Act and the Minor Offenses Act.

According to KORAIL, the incident occurred around midnight on the 3rd aboard the Line 1 train bound for Cheonan (Gwangwoon University Station at 21:49 on the 2nd → Cheonan Station at 00:20 on the 3rd) near Seojeong-ri Station.

Under Article 47 of the current Railroad Safety Act, anyone who causes sexual humiliation to railroad workers or passengers may be fined up to 5 million KRW. Additionally, Article 3 of the Minor Offenses Act stipulates a fine of 100,000 KRW if a person urinates or defecates in public places where many people gather or pass by and fails to clean up afterward.

Meanwhile, KORAIL stated that on the day of the incident, after the train arrived at its final destination, intensive cleaning and disinfection of the train car were conducted.

The incident became known after a post titled "Real-time Line 1 Urination Villain" was uploaded to an anonymous university student community on the 3rd.

The author wrote, "Is this for real? I met the worst villain on my way back from a trip," along with a video about 10 seconds long.

The video shows a man inside a subway car urinating facing an empty seat. The liquid, presumed to be urine, can be seen spilling onto the seat in the footage.

However, according to the author’s explanation, since it was late past midnight, the train car was reportedly sparsely populated at the time.

The video and photos spread online, causing public outrage. Netizens reacted with shock, saying things like "Disgusting," "He must be crazy," and "How can someone do such an outrageous thing so openly?"
