[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Son Seon-hee] Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun appointed Jeong Hae-gu, former professor at Sungkonghoe University (66), as the 8th Chairman of the Economic and Humanities and Social Sciences Research Council (Gyeonginsa) on the 4th and presented him with a certificate of appointment, the Office for Government Policy Coordination announced. The term of the Gyeonginsa chairman is three years.
The Office for Government Policy Coordination stated, "Chairman Jeong is a scholar who has conducted research in various fields such as Korean politics, society, and administration, and has deep insight into the economic and humanities and social sciences fields," adding, "He is the right person to design the national future vision and establish mid- to long-term development strategies by consolidating the policy research capabilities of government-funded research institutions, given his rich experience in state affairs and policy."
Gyeonginsa supports, fosters, and manages 26 government-funded research institutions (including 2 affiliated institutions) in the economic and humanities and social sciences fields, such as the Korea Development Institute (KDI) and the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. The chairman serves as the chairperson of the board of directors, planning the development direction of research institutions and performing duties such as appointing and dismissing executives (presidents, auditors) of affiliated research institutions.
Additionally, Prime Minister Chung appointed three members to the Gyeonginsa board: Lee Woo-jin, professor of economics at Korea University; Lee Jin, professor at the Humanities Convergence Headquarters of Konyang University; and Jeong Young-cheol, professor at the Graduate School of Public Policy at Sogang University. This follows the succession of three members whose terms expired among the eight board members.
Prime Minister Chung urged, "Based on your accumulated experience, please demonstrate leadership that drives the development of government-funded research institutions and actively play a role in turning the COVID-19 crisis into an opportunity for our country to leap forward as a global leader."
