[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] Ryu Seongsil (28) has been selected as the winner of the 19th Herm?s Foundation Art Award. The Herm?s Foundation Art Award was established by Herm?s Korea in 2000 to support the Korean art scene.

The judging panel announced the results on the 3rd, stating, "Ryu presented a new approach that disrupts the traditional dichotomous order of art and non-art, reality and fiction through a kind of 'one-person media show.' His works combine and reconstruct his family history, contemporary Korean political and social issues, and traditional forms with a sharp perspective, building an artistic world that encompasses both locality and universality."

The judges included independent curator Kim Yoonkyung, Herm?s curator; Yang Hyegyu, professor at St?delschule in Germany and the 2003 award recipient; Yoo Jinsang, professor at Kaywon School of Art and Design; Italian sculptor Giuseppe Penone; French artist Jean-Michel Alberola; and Pascal Mussard, vice president of the Herm?s Foundation.

Ryu graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Seoul National University and has held solo exhibitions and participated in curated shows at various alternative spaces and museums in Korea over the past several years. He has also gained attention for his works that sharply combine and reconstruct Korea's political and social issues.
