[Asia Economy PD Yoon Jin-geun] According to statistics from the Ministry of Employment and Labor, as of 2018, there were 102,305 industrial accident victims, among whom 2,142 died. This ranks among the highest in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries.
In particular, over the past four years, the number of accident victims at the top 10 construction companies reached approximately 4,200, with 125 deaths caused by accidents.
When injured or involved in an accident during work, one must apply for industrial accident compensation, but many find it overwhelming to know what and how to prepare.
On the Asia Economy YouTube channel, the 'Ibakchoi Legal Center' featured lawyer Lee Ki-yoon, who explained the tips for applying for industrial accident compensation. The law firm 'Saram,' to which lawyer Lee belongs, is composed of lawyers specializing in industrial accidents.
According to lawyer Lee, industrial accidents under the Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance Act can be classified into three types: ▲work-related accidents ▲work-related diseases ▲commuting accidents.
He then reviewed the measures workers can take when an industrial accident occurs. According to lawyer Lee, these can be broadly divided into ▲application for industrial accident insurance benefits ▲civil claims for damages ▲criminal complaints.
In particular, lawyer Lee emphasized that compensation can be received not only for physical illnesses but also for mental and emotional issues. He also explained that cases involving extreme choices can be recognized as industrial accidents.
Lawyer Lee stated, "To cope with industrial accidents, you only need to remember three things," citing "the fact that industrial accident applications are possible even without the employer's consent, the need to secure materials such as the accident site and work details at the time of the accident, and the necessity of consulting experts for ambiguous matters."
