Gwangju City Announces Bid for Electrical Work of Phase 1 Main Line of Urban Railway Line 2

Electric Construction Worth 90.4 Billion KRW for 12 Lots Including Transmission, General Electricity, and Overhead Lines

Gwangju City Announces Bid for Electrical Work of Phase 1 Main Line of Urban Railway Line 2

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 3rd that it has posted a bid notice on the Nara Marketplace for a total of 12 electrical works (total project cost of 90.4 billion KRW) for the main line of Phase 1 of Gwangju Urban Railway Line 2, and plans to select a contractor and start construction next month.

As the civil engineering work for Phase 1 of Gwangju Urban Railway Line 2 has been progressing smoothly according to the original plan despite adverse conditions such as COVID-19 and the prolonged rainy season lasting over 50 days last year, the electrical work for the main line section is now being ordered accordingly.

The project area covers a 17 km section of the Phase 1 main line from Yudeok-dong Vehicle Depot to City Hall, Baegun Square, and Gwangju Station, including 20 stations and 20 ventilation shafts.

Among these, the Yudeok-dong Vehicle Depot signed a contract worth 10 billion KRW last November for three fields including power transmission and transformation, and construction is currently underway.

Gwangju City divided the electrical work for Phase 1 of Line 2 into 12 lots across three fields?power transmission and transformation, general electrical work, and overhead catenary system?to encourage active participation from local electrical contractors.

For power transmission and transformation and general electrical work, companies without prior construction records are allowed to participate in single bids, while for the overhead catenary system, companies with at least 1 km of construction experience can bid alone; those without such experience must participate through a joint contract with at least 49% local company involvement.

This project is expected to play a vital role in creating local jobs and revitalizing the regional economy, which has been severely affected by COVID-19.

The electrical work for Phase 1 of Line 2 secured the full project budget after consultations with the Ministry of Economy and Finance in October last year, completed detailed design in December, and finished contract review in February.

Of the total electrical work budget of 90.4 billion KRW, 47.2 billion KRW excluding government-supplied materials will be ordered this time, and 43.2 billion KRW including government-supplied materials will be ordered in the second half of the year.

Wi Gi-ryang, Head of the Electrical Department at the Urban Railway Construction Headquarters, said, “We have planned this electrical work with a strong emphasis on providing opportunities for many local companies to participate, so we expect active involvement from local firms. We will also do our best to minimize inconvenience to citizens and prevent safety accidents during the construction process.”
