Publication of a Data Collection Confirming Organized and Uibyeong Participation in the Gwangju-Jeonnam March 1st Movement

[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] A collection of materials confirming that the March 1st Movement that took place in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions was organized and involved righteous armies has been published.

Jeonnam Province announced on the 3rd that a Korean-translated collection titled “The March 1st Movement in Gwangju and Jeonnam Seen Through Court Verdicts,” which translates the verdicts of 345 people imprisoned for the March 1st Movement in Gwangju and Jeonnam, has been published.

The translation of the verdicts was overseen by Professor Park Hae-hyun of Chodang University. To publicize the anti-Japanese independence spirit of the patriots during the Japanese colonial period and to instill pride in Honam as the “Land of Righteous Armies,” Jeonnam Province and Gwangju Metropolitan City supported the project.

The Korean-translated collection “The March 1st Movement in Gwangju and Jeonnam Seen Through Court Verdicts” translates the first, second, and third trial verdicts of those involved in the March 1st Movement in Gwangju and Jeonnam held by the National Archives, and systematically investigates and organizes the characteristics of the March 1st Movement in the Honam region, its development by area, and the participants.

It consists of Part 1: The March 1st Movement in Gwangju and Jeonnam and its development by region as seen in the verdicts; Part 2: Translated verdict materials; and Part 3: Profiles of figures involved in the March 1st Movement in Gwangju and Jeonnam as seen in the verdicts. It includes appendices and the original verdict texts, totaling about 630 pages.

The March 1st Movement in the Honam region was carried out in an organized manner in advance, and it can be confirmed that figures who participated in the righteous armies also joined the March 1st Movement.

Yu Young-kwang, head of the Cultural Resources Division of Jeonnam Province, said, “In addition to publishing this Korean-translated collection that reveals the vivid scenes of the March 1st Movement, we are also promoting the translation of the war diary of the 14th Infantry Regiment of the Japanese Army, which fought against the righteous armies from 1907 to 1909.” He added, “Through the collection, research, and publication of valuable materials related to the establishment of the Namdo Righteous Army Museum, we will promote Jeonnam as the Land of Righteous Armies.”
