Seocho Shantytown Heunin Village to Be Developed

[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] Heunin Village, a shantytown in the Gangnam area of Seoul that has endured various hardships, is set to be developed.

On the 3rd, Seoul City announced that it has approved and publicly notified the implementation plan for the Heunin Village urban development project, covering 132,523㎡ in the Naegok-dong 374 area of Seocho-gu.

The project implementer is the 'Heunin Village Urban Development District Urban Development Project Association,' composed of landowners and others.

According to the implementation plan, the existing natural green area will be changed to Type 1 exclusive residential area and Type 2 exclusive residential area, creating a total of 261 households, including 45 single-family houses and 216 apartment units.

According to the schedule, the land readjustment plan will be established and compensation procedures will be carried out within this year, with construction starting next year and completion expected by the end of 2023.

Heunin Village was established in the 1960s as a settlement for people who had Hansen's disease. Being a shantytown located in the Gangnam area, development attempts have been made since the mid-2000s but were delayed for a long time.

There was progress such as the designation of the urban development district in March 2009 and the application for approval of the implementation plan in 2011, but it stalled due to the global financial crisis.

There have also been recent allegations that Choi Seo-won intervened during the Park Geun-hye administration to have this area designated as a Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport New Stay project district.
