Visits and mail submissions accepted until April 20... Recommendations also available online starting this year
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 2nd that it will publicly recruit candidates for the ‘2021 35th Gwangju Citizen Award’ from the 2nd to April 20th.
Marking its 35th year, the Citizen Award is given to citizens of Gwangju who have made remarkable contributions to the advancement of scholarship and the creative development of culture and arts, or who have made clear achievements in enhancing the honor of Gwangju City and regional development.
The categories are ▲Social Service ▲Academic ▲Culture and Arts ▲Sports ▲Regional Economic Promotion, with one recipient selected in each category.
The Culture and Arts Award was previously awarded under the arts category, but considering that since last year the scope of recipients has included citizens who contributed to cultural promotion and development, the name was changed this year.
Eligibility for participation requires residency registration in Gwangju for more than three years as of the announcement date (March 2), and meeting the requirements for each category.
Gwangju City plans to accept award candidate applications from March 15 to April 20 via in-person visits, mail, and online methods.
Online recommendations were newly introduced this year to easily allow anyone to recommend neighbors who serve as role models and have made hidden contributions to Gwangju.
Accordingly, as in previous years, recommendations can be submitted by visiting or mailing with endorsements from heads of various institutions, leaders of social organizations, presidents or deans of colleges or higher, or at least 20 citizens. Online submissions are also possible through the Gwangju City website.
However, candidates recommended online must receive at least 30 votes of support on the Gwangju City website to be selected as preliminary candidates, after which a review by the working committee will recommend them as official candidates.
Gwangju City has extended the public recruitment period for Citizen Award candidates to 50 days, 20 days longer than last year, to encourage active online recommendations and more citizen participation, and plans to conduct promotional activities.
For in-person or mail submissions, documents such as the recommendation letter, achievement report, resume, resident registration abstract, consent form for personal information collection, and other supporting evidence must be prepared and submitted to the City Hall’s Autonomous Administration Division by visit or mail.
Online submissions can be made through the ‘Baro Sotong Gwangju’ website using the Citizen Award recommendation menu.
Detailed information such as category requirements and recommendation form templates can be found in the announcement on the Gwangju City website.
Additionally, to ensure fairness and select recipients who resonate with citizens, the achievements of candidates will be disclosed in advance on the website, with objections accepted and re-verification conducted until the end of next month. If a candidate does not agree to the prior disclosure of achievements, their recommendation may be restricted.
Recommended candidates will be reviewed by the Citizen Award judging committee to determine the final recipients, who will be awarded at the 56th Citizen’s Day ceremony on May 21.
Kim Il-yong, Director of the Autonomous Administration Bureau of Gwangju City, said, “We have boldly innovated the Citizen Award selection process so that citizens who have quietly contributed to the local community can be recognized. We ask everyone to actively recommend neighbors who serve as role models.”
Meanwhile, the Citizen Award has produced a total of 153 recipients, including 145 individuals and 8 organizations. Awardees serve as members of the City Administration Advisory Council and the Citizen Award Judging Committee, are inducted into the Hall of Fame, and receive honors such as invitations to various major events.
