Knotting Artisans, Chiljang, Najeonjang... Intangible Cultural Heritage Welcomes Spring with Songs Maedeupjang (Kim Hye-sun)


This month, public events for National Intangible Cultural Heritage will be held across the country. According to the National Intangible Heritage Center on the 2nd, eight public events are scheduled for this month. Due to social distancing measures related to COVID-19, functional categories will focus on exhibitions, while performing arts categories will hold no-audience or minimal-audience performances.


In Seoul, Jeong Bongseop and Kim Hyesoon will demonstrate 'Maedeupjang (18th?21st)'. This is a technique of knotting and making tassels using braided cords made by combining multiple strands of thread. At the Sungkyunkwan Daeseongjeon, the 'Seokjeon Daeje' ritual will be held to honor Confucius and other sages.

At the Gyeonggi Furniture Creative Studio exhibition hall in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, Lee Hyungman and Jeong Suhwa will showcase 'Najeonjang (27th?29th)' and 'Chiljang (27th?29th)' respectively. In Boeun, Chungnam Province, Kim Youngjo will reveal 'Nakhwajang (19th?21st)'. This is a technique of burning paper, wood, and leather with a heated iron to create paintings such as landscapes and bird-and-flower motifs.

In Mungyeong, Gyeongbuk Province, Lee Hyunggeun will demonstrate 'Yugijang (18th?20th)', the craft of making various brass utensils. In Jeju, the 'Jeju Chilmeoridang Yeongdeunggut (26th)' public event will take place. This is a ritual praying for the village’s peace and prosperity to Yeongdeun Grandma, the wind goddess, and Yongwang, the sea god.
