Additional Charges of Incitement and Violation of the Telecommunications Act... Total of 4 Charges Including Export-Import Law and Natural Disaster Management Act Violations
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Two additional criminal charges were added against Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar's State Counselor, in a single day, signaling the military's full-scale 'political elimination' operation against her.
AFP and other news agencies reported on the 1st, citing her lawyer, that Suu Kyi attended a court hearing held via video conference in the capital, Naypyidaw. Since the coup on the 1st of last month, Suu Kyi has been under house arrest at her residence in Naypyidaw.
The lawyer said Suu Kyi appeared thinner but looked healthy and expressed her desire to meet with her legal team. This was the first time Suu Kyi's appearance was revealed to her lawyers through video.
The lawyer explained that prior to the hearing, Suu Kyi was charged with another offense related to violating a law prohibiting the announcement or publication of information that causes anxiety or fear.
Local media Myanmar Now reported, citing one of the lawyers from the National League for Democracy (NLD), that Suu Kyi was additionally charged with incitement.
The lawyer also added that Suu Kyi was charged with violating the Telecommunications Law, which is known to be related to the license for using electronic devices.
AFP reported that Kin Maung Cho, speaking to reporters in Naypyidaw, said, "It is uncertain how many more charges Suu Kyi will face," adding, "Anything can happen in this country right now."
Previously, Suu Kyi was charged on the 3rd of last month with using illegal walkie-talkies (violation of the Export and Import Law), and on the 16th, she was charged again for not following COVID-19 preventive measures (violation of the Natural Disaster Management Law). The lawyer added that the next video hearing is scheduled for the 15th.
