[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Buk-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Moon In) announced on the 1st that it will begin full-scale construction after holding the groundbreaking ceremony for the Buk-gu Sports Complex at 2 p.m. on the 2nd.
The event will be held with a minimum number of attendees, including the Mayor of Gwangju, local members of the National Assembly, city and district council members, related organization officials, and resident representatives.
The Buk-gu Sports Complex will be newly built in the Yeonje-dong area with a total investment of 16 billion KRW, covering a total floor area of 4,995㎡ (4 floors above ground), and is scheduled for completion in June next year.
The first floor will house the sports office, a sports cafe, and a fitness certification center. The second floor will be a multipurpose gymnasium with 16 badminton courts, 3 basketball courts, and 3 table tennis courts.
The third and fourth floors will feature program rooms and meeting rooms available for local residents, as well as 671 spectator seats for watching various sports games.
Buk-gu expects that once the sports complex is completed, the inconvenience of residents having to visit other districts or Jeonnam for international competitions due to the lack of a proper sports complex in Gwangju will be resolved.
In particular, it is expected to become a representative facility where over 40 sports disciplines and more than 100,000 amateur athletes and nearby residents can enjoy sports activities.
Mayor Moon In of Buk-gu said, “We will steadily proceed with the construction project of the Buk-gu Sports Complex to improve the quality of life for residents,” and added, “We will focus on promoting residents' health and revitalizing sports culture through attracting large-scale sports events in the future.”
