[Asia Economy Reporter Nana] A man in his 30s who refused a breathalyzer test after being stopped on the road while driving under the influence was sentenced to a suspended prison term.

On the 1st, the Chuncheon District Court announced that it sentenced A (34), who was indicted for refusing a breathalyzer test under the Road Traffic Act, to 1 year and 6 months in prison with a 3-year suspension. Additionally, he was ordered to complete 80 hours of community service and 40 hours of a safe driving lecture.

On October 6th last year, around midnight, A drove approximately 1.5 km in Chuncheon while intoxicated, then parked his vehicle in the second lane and fell asleep.

A witness who saw this reported, "There was a risk of an accident, and when I spoke to the driver, he seemed to smell of alcohol." The responding police officers noticed A staggering and slurring his speech and requested a breathalyzer test four times, but A refused each time.

The court stated, "Despite having been punished twice for drunk driving in the past three years, the defendant committed this offense, which reflects poorly on his character. However, considering that he has belatedly shown remorse and that no traffic accident occurred during the incident," it made its ruling.
