Healthy Eating Habits for Better Food!... Operation of 'Geumcheon Jangdokdae'

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) is operating the ‘Geumcheon Jangdokdae’ program from March to promote healthy eating habits and awareness of proper food through jang (fermented sauce) making, and is recruiting participants starting from the 3rd.

This year, the program will be conducted in two formats: ‘Uri Jangdokdae,’ where families, friends, neighbors, and colleagues participate together, and ‘Children’s Jangdokdae,’ where children participate with their families.

The children’s program was added to foster proper eating habits among children.

The total number of participants is 200, with 140 for Uri Jangdokdae and 60 for Children’s Jangdokdae.

Participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents wishing to participate must fill out an application form at the Health Promotion Division of the Public Health Center and pay the material fee (participation fee).

The program consists of three sessions: ‘Jang Making’ in March, ‘Jang Dividing’ in April, and ‘Jang Sharing’ in October. Only those who attend all sessions will be able to take home the homemade doenjang (3kg) and soy sauce (500ml).

Due to COVID-19, a maximum of 4 people per jangdok group will participate, with 2 to 3 groups per day. From March 15, theoretical education and the program will be conducted in multiple sessions.

The newly established Children’s Jangdokdae this year will be operated as a weekend program so that children can participate accompanied by their families.

Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “I hope that through jang making, which is the foundation of Korean cuisine, people will form proper eating habits and lay the foundation for lifelong health. I also hope that from children to seniors, families and neighbors can enjoy making jang together and have a moment to forget about COVID-19 and smile.”
