[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] The National Police Agency announced on the 1st that it will conduct a one-month pilot operation of the 'Crime Risk Prediction Analysis System (Pre-CAS),' which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to predict crimes.
The crime prediction system is built to have AI analyze big data that integrates police security data such as crime statistics and 112 emergency calls with public data including population and weather, in order to predict crime risk levels.
The system displays the crime risk rating of a specific area (100m×100m) at two-hour intervals. The crime risk, divided into 10 levels, serves as an indicator of how vulnerable the area is to crime. Locations and routes with high risk are automatically transmitted to patrol car navigation systems to enable proactive patrolling. Additionally, it predicts the number of crimes and disorder incidents by time and place, allowing for pre-deployment of police officers.
Furthermore, detailed and in-depth analysis is possible by comparing the status of local security facilities, 112 call records, and crime prevention diagnosis results on a single screen. Various functions such as clustering of crime-vulnerable locations and keyword analysis are also provided.
The system will first be piloted in three metropolitan police agencies: Ulsan, Northern Gyeonggi, and Chungnam. The police expect that using this system will help in proactive preventive patrols in predicted high-risk areas and in preparing customized crime prevention activities tailored to regional characteristics. After addressing any issues, the police plan to expand the system nationwide by April.
A National Police Agency official stated, “We will continue to develop and support advanced systems to ensure efficient crime prevention activities in the field. Metropolitan police agencies will share the role of utilizing this system on-site to ensure there are no gaps in the safety network amid the implementation of the autonomous police system.”
