Hyundai Ioniq 5, Big Hit in Europe Following Success in Korea

[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Hyundai Motor's first dedicated electric vehicle, the 'Ioniq 5,' has been gaining great popularity in Europe following its success in Korea.

According to Hyundai Motor's European branch on the 28th, as of the 25th (local time), pre-orders for the Ioniq 5 in Europe were limited to 3,000 units, but over 10,000 people, more than three times the available quantity, applied.

In Europe, a deposit of 1,000 euros was required to proceed with the pre-order. Hyundai Motor Europe reported that since the unveiling of the Ioniq 5, there have been 236,000 inquiries and expressions of interest regarding the vehicle.

The Ioniq 5 is the first model to apply Hyundai Motor Group's dedicated electric vehicle platform, E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform). Electric vehicles built on the E-GMP platform reduce costs compared to those using internal combustion engine platforms and improve performance in all aspects including battery, speed, driving range, and design.

The Ioniq 5 also received significant attention in Korea, where it was unveiled prior to Europe. Hyundai Motor announced on the 26th that pre-orders through nationwide dealerships, which began on the 25th, reached 23,760 units on the first day.

The Ioniq 5 can travel approximately 500 km on a single charge (based on WLTP standards). Additionally, equipped with an 800V charging system, it can charge up to 80% within 18 minutes using ultra-fast chargers, boasting relatively superior performance compared to other electric vehicles. Thanks to the platform's battery floor layout, it secures spacious interior and cargo space that electric vehicles built on traditional internal combustion engine platforms do not have.

The distinctive design also draws attention. The Ioniq 5 features Hyundai Motor's core design element, the ‘Parametric Pixel.’ The Parametric Pixel is a design that visualizes pixels, the smallest units that make up an image.

Inside, it applies a flat floor that eliminates the interior tunnel, a structural limitation of internal combustion engine vehicles, and a Universal Island console that can move forward and backward.

To enhance sustainability in mobility, a large number of eco-friendly materials and environmentally friendly manufacturing methods were applied. Some leather seats and door armrests use fabric made by crushing and processing recycled transparent PET bottles, and bio-materials extracted from sugarcane are used in the doors, dashboard, ceiling, and floor areas.

Hyundai Motor plans to aggressively target the global electric vehicle market centered on the Ioniq 5. It will be launched first in Europe next month, with sales expected to roll out sequentially from April in Korea, North America, and other regions.
