[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Dong-wook] On the 28th, Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongbuk Province, paid tribute to the 2·28 Democratic Movement Memorial Tower located in Duryu Park, Dalseo-gu, Daegu, and at 10:35 a.m., attended the '61st Anniversary 2·28 Democratic Movement Commemoration Ceremony' held at the Daegu Culture and Arts Center.
The 2·28 Democratic Movement was the first democratic resistance movement after liberation, spontaneously initiated by about 1,700 students from eight schools in the Daegu area, including Gyeongbuk High School, in 1960 against the Syngman Rhee dictatorship. It is recorded as the catalyst for the April 19 Revolution and the beginning of the Korean democratization movement led by teenage students.
The schools participating in the protest at that time were eight schools: Gyeongbuk High School, Daegu High School, Sadaebu High School, Daegu Commercial High School (currently Daegu Sangwon High School), Daegu Agricultural High School (currently Daegu Agricultural Meister High School), Daegu Technical High School, Gyeongbuk Girls' High School, and Daegu Girls' High School.
Since 2016, Gyeongbuk Province, pursuing the designation of a national memorial day as a cooperative task with Daegu, launched a one million signature campaign in the same year, and the government eventually established and promulgated it as a national memorial day on February 6, 2018.
The event was held with the participation of key government figures including Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun and related persons of the 2·28 Democratic Movement.
Governor Lee Cheol-woo of Gyeongbuk Province said, "The 2·28 Democratic Movement is the starting point of the democratization movement and the cornerstone of today's democratic prosperity," adding, "We will inherit the noble patriotism of the students who longed for justice and freedom, continue to make great efforts in veterans-related projects, and widely promote the status of Gyeongbuk as the homeland of national defense."
