National Assembly Passes Resolution Condemning Myanmar Military Coup: "Do Not Use Force Against Civilians"

[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] On the 26th, the National Assembly passed a resolution condemning the Myanmar military coup.

On this day, the National Assembly held a plenary session and passed the "Resolution Condemning the Myanmar Military Coup and Urging the Restoration of Democracy and the Release of Detainees."

In Yangon, Myanmar's largest city, on the 16th (local time), protesters covered their eyes and mouths with black cloth and tape while holding demonstrations condemning the coup. Despite concerns over a violent crackdown as military forces and armored vehicles have been deployed in major cities including Yangon, large-scale protests resisting the military continue day after day.

The passed resolution states that "the Myanmar military coup is defined and condemned as a serious challenge to democracy," and "the National Assembly urges the prompt release of politicians and related persons detained during the Myanmar military coup, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi."

Furthermore, the National Assembly called for the protection of the safety of Korean residents in the area and urged the Myanmar military to cease using force against civilians.
