[Asia Economy Reporter Chunhee Lee] The Asan Social Welfare Foundation awarded 4.4 billion KRW in scholarships to over 700 Asan Scholars in 2021.

On the afternoon of the 25th, the Asan Social Welfare Foundation announced on the 26th that it had awarded a total of 4.4 billion KRW in scholarships to 713 Asan Scholars in 2021, including 50 graduate students in the biomedical sciences, 583 university students, and 80 high school students.

The graduate scholarships in the biomedical sciences were first awarded in 2017 with 7 scholars selected, and the number of recipients has increased annually, reaching a total of 50 this year, including 35 domestic and 15 overseas students. Graduate scholars receive scholarships ranging from 20 to 40 million KRW annually until graduation.

University scholars receive full tuition support until graduation. This includes 127 'Narae Scholars' who face the risk of dropping out due to financial difficulties, 32 'Dasom Scholars' who overcome physical disabilities to pursue their studies, 58 'Talent Sharing Scholars' who share their knowledge and talents with marginalized neighbors, and 136 'Academic Excellence Scholars.' Additionally, 230 'MIU (Men In Uniform) Children Scholars' were included, established to encourage and instill pride in personnel serving in social safety roles such as military, police, firefighters, and coast guard.

In particular, Narae Scholars and Dasom Scholars receive an additional monthly living allowance of 200,000 KRW besides tuition support to help them focus on their studies in a more stable environment.

Furthermore, the Asan Foundation selected 80 e-learning scholars, providing course vouchers and textbooks to high school students from low-income families to enable online learning.

Since its establishment in 1977, the Asan Foundation has continuously carried out scholarship programs. To date, it has awarded a total of 78.3 billion KRW in scholarships to over 35,000 students.
