GS Group Launches 'Eco-friendly Council' to Strengthen ESG Management

GS Group Launches 'Eco-friendly Council' to Strengthen ESG Management Heo Tae-soo, Chairman of GS Group

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] GS Group has established an eco-friendly council and is officially promoting ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management.

On the 24th, GS Group announced that it officially launched the "Eco-Friendly Council," composed of Chief Green Officers (CGOs) from each affiliate, at the GS Tower in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, with GS Group Chairman Huh Tae-soo participating.

The Eco-Friendly Council is the highest decision-making body responsible for deliberation and resolution regarding GS Group's ESG management and promotion of eco-friendly new businesses. It is in charge of social contribution, mutual growth, sustainable management, safety, health, environment, and the promotion of eco-friendly new businesses.

The Eco-Friendly Council, which meets once a month, is chaired by GS Corporation President Hong Soon-ki, with CGOs from each affiliate participating as members to discuss current issues. The CEOs of each company serve as advisors. Chairman Huh and the CEOs of each company plan to discuss issues through an expanded Eco-Friendly Council held quarterly.

The Eco-Friendly Council will have three subcommittees: the ESG subcommittee, responsible for ESG management as well as social contribution, mutual growth, and sustainable management which were previously operated; the Safety, Health, and Environment subcommittee, responsible for air pollution, carbon emissions, and facility operations at each business site; and the Eco-Friendly New Business subcommittee, responsible for climate change response, industrial bio, and resource recycling.

'Sustainable Management through Eco-Friendliness,' Newly Established as GS Group's Core Value

The strengthening of ESG management through the Eco-Friendly Council reflects the strong will of Chairman Huh to promote eco-friendly management, incorporating the results of the "GS Environmental Sustainability Project" conducted last year with each affiliate.

Chairman Huh stated, "Pursuing environmental sustainability is a demand from society and customers. Especially when promoting new businesses along with energy saving and efficiency in existing businesses, environmental sustainability must be considered first," emphasizing eco-friendly management.

GS has newly established "Growth through Sustainability" as the group's core value. This core value, which pursues environmentally sustainable growth, includes saving resources and reducing harmful substance emissions through collaboration among energy, distribution, construction, and service affiliates ('Reduce'), improving business processes and consumer touchpoint experiences so that consumers and employees can enjoy environmentally sustainable daily lives ('Improve'), and securing environmentally sustainable business growth engines through innovative digital and bio technologies ('Innovate'). It also contains plans to implement these step-by-step, considering the different situations and environments of each affiliate.

A GS Group official said, "Through the newly launched Eco-Friendly Council, we will strengthen ESG management through collaboration among all GS Group employees and affiliates, and actively implement eco-friendliness even in small parts to practice our core value of 'Sustainable Management through Eco-Friendliness.'"

Expectations for Strengthening ESG Management Across GS Group through the Eco-Friendly Council

GS Group expects to spread and strengthen ESG management across the entire group through the Eco-Friendly Council by organizing three subcommittees under it and encouraging active collaboration among affiliates to create synergy effects.

The ESG subcommittee will establish eco-friendly policies and promote social responsibility and transparent management through collaboration among affiliates in ESG management, social contribution, mutual growth, and sustainable management fields. The Safety, Health, and Environment subcommittee will discuss management of air pollution, wastewater, and waste at each business site, as well as energy saving and efficiency policies, and handle carbon emission rights management in line with climate change agreements and the Carbon Emission 2050 policy.

The Eco-Friendly New Business subcommittee will discuss climate change response and industrial bio topics such as renewable energy, Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), electric vehicles, hydrogen charging stations, drones and mobility, bio materials, bio chemicals, bio fuels, and resource recycling businesses such as waste battery and waste plastic recycling.
