Huawei Wireless CTO "Integrating 5G with Various Industries... Creating a New $10 Trillion Market"

[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Cho] "If the integration of 5G with various industries accelerates, a new market space worth over $10 trillion will be created."

Tong Yuan, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Huawei's Wireless Network Product Line, stated at the 'MWC Shanghai 2021' 5G Industry Evolution Summit on the 23rd, "5G evolution must continue to build the driving force for digitalization across all industries," adding, "Innovation in technology and applications will open up infinite possibilities for 5G evolution over the next decade."

In his keynote speech titled ‘Building the Driving Force for Industry-wide Digitalization through Continuous 5G Evolution,’ CTO Tong emphasized, "5G must expand the boundaries of its capabilities to create new business domains." He noted, "Over the past year, 5G has evolved at a faster pace and demonstrated tremendous potential," mentioning ultra-low latency services enabled by 5G networks such as the Internet of Things (IoT), remote control, and immersive interactive services including Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (AR·VR). For example, to realize 5G Mixed Reality (XR), it is necessary to increase the average speed from 120 Mbps to 2 Gbps and reduce transmission latency from 20 ms to 5 ms, underscoring the need for continuous 5G evolution.

CTO Tong stated, "Uplink-centric networks are accelerating industrial digitalization," and predicted, "The proportion of uplink traffic through 5G networks will increase significantly to over 40%. To handle such a massive amount of uplink traffic, 5G uplink capabilities must be improved by at least tenfold." He also pointed out the need to provide sensing functions to enhance features such as remote control, vehicle-road synergy, unmanned transportation, and smart logistics. For instance, by introducing beam sweeping of cellular massive MIMO into sensing technology, wireless technology can realize detection, communication, and even indoor high-precision positioning services.

Huawei proposed 5.5G, which will contribute to exploring new applications such as Uplink-Centric Broadband Communication (UCBC), Real-Time Broadband Communication (RTBC), and Harmonized Communication and Sensing (HCS), aiming to build the driving force for industry-wide digitalization while realizing the prospects of the mobile industry based on rich practical experience.

CTO Tong emphasized, "Both technology and business are essential to promote and drive industrial development," adding, "If the integration of 5G with various industries accelerates, a new market space worth over $10 trillion will be created." He further explained, "Continuous advancement of 5G should enhance network functions and expand service scenarios to reduce connection costs while providing additional support for integration," stating, "This can create potential business opportunities worth over $100 billion in the IoT industry."

He stressed, "The wireless communication industry cannot succeed without unified standards and industrial collaboration," urging, "We must define 5G evolution together, promote industrial cooperation, accelerate technology maturity, and build a sustainable future with 5G."

Meanwhile, MWC Shanghai 2021 is being held in Shanghai, China, until the 25th of this month.
