Yeongdeungpo Launches "Go! Go! Challenge" to Reduce Plastic Use

[Asia Economy, Reporter Park Jongil] Yeongdeungpo District (District Mayor Chae Hyunil) launched the “Go! Go! Challenge,” a campaign to reduce plastic use in daily life, through social media starting on February 20.

The “Go! Go! Challenge” is a relay campaign initiated by the Ministry of Environment to spread social consensus on the need to reduce plastic use.

Participants pledge to do one thing to reduce plastic and refrain from one thing that increases plastic use, post hashtags such as “#?Plastic” on their personal social media, and nominate three others to join the campaign.

On February 20, District Mayor Chae Hyunil of Yeongdeungpo joined the campaign through his personal Facebook account after being nominated by Lee Sung, Mayor of Guro District, and Lee Changwoo, Mayor of Dongjak District.

Mayor Chae stated, “Together with our staff, I will continue to lead the way in achieving zero waste by consistently reducing plastic use for environmental protection,” and added, “I will make Yeongdeungpo a spacious, eco-friendly city that prioritizes the health of its residents.”

Mayor Chae nominated Ko Gipan, Chairman of the Yeongdeungpo District Council, Lee Donghak, CEO of the Waste Center, and Lee Soju, CEO of Green Hero Social Kitchen, as the next participants in the campaign.

Meanwhile, starting with this campaign, the district will change its existing approach and launch the “Yeongdeungpo Go! Go! Challenge” involving all staff members. This aims to further spread the culture of reducing plastic use and encourage public institutions to take the lead in these efforts.

The “Yeongdeungpo Go! Go! Challenge” will proceed as follows: staff prepare a statement pledging to reduce plastic use; take a photo or video with a reusable pledge panel; share it on the administrative portal’s bulletin board to exchange ideas for reducing plastic; and nominate one person or group as the next participant.

Within February, the district will establish an online bulletin board for the “?Plastic Go! Go! Challenge” on its administrative portal and will officially launch the “Yeongdeungpo Go! Go! Challenge” campaign in March.

Going forward, the district plans to expand the campaign to affiliated organizations and groups.

District Mayor Chae Hyunil emphasized, “Reducing plastic use is no longer an option but a necessity to preserve a clean environment for future generations,” and urged, “I ask all staff and residents to empathize with and actively participate in reducing plastic use.”
