[Asia Economy Reporters Oh Ju-yeon and Lee Hyun-joo] Ahead of the by-election, citizens of Busan showed similar support for the two major parties, the Democratic Party of Korea and the People Power Party, within the margin of error. According to a public opinion poll conducted by Win-G Korea Consulting on 1,018 eligible voters residing in Busan from the 20th to the 21st, support for President Moon Jae-in stood at 45.0%, an increase of 2.3 percentage points compared to the third week of December last year (December 12-13). Those who did not support him accounted for 51.2%, a decrease of 2.5 percentage points. The difference between support and non-support was 6.1 percentage points, which is outside the margin of error.

When broken down by gender, 42.9% of men and 47.1% of women responded that they support the president. By age group, support was dominant among those in their 30s to 50s. In particular, support was highest among those in their 40s at 58.5%, with those in their 30s and 50s at 52.5% and 50.7%, respectively. Conversely, among those in their 20s, 60s, and those aged 70 and above, the majority expressed non-support at 55.7%, 64.0%, and 61.1%, respectively.


Party support showed a close race between the Democratic Party of Korea and the People Power Party.

Support for the People Power Party was 33.2%, while the Democratic Party stood at 30.6%. The gap between the two parties was 2.6 percentage points, within the margin of error. Compared to the third week of December last year, the Democratic Party’s support increased by 0.4 percentage points, while the People Power Party’s support rose by 1.2 percentage points.


By age group, the Democratic Party was dominant among those in their 30s and 40s, while the People Power Party led among those aged 60 and above. Support for other parties was as follows: the People’s Party at 5.9%, the Open Democratic Party at 5.6%, the Justice Party at 4.8%, and other parties at 2.3%. The proportion of undecided or non-affiliated voters was 17.5%. The Justice Party saw a significant increase of 1.9 percentage points compared to the previous survey, while the People’s Party and the Open Democratic Party decreased by 2.2 percentage points and 0.3 percentage points, respectively.


This survey was conducted from the 20th to the 21st among eligible voters aged 18 and over residing in Busan Metropolitan City, with an overall response rate of 11.8%, totaling 1,018 respondents. The survey method was wireless ARS using 100% mobile phone virtual numbers. The sample was extracted using weighted values by gender, age, and region based on the resident registration population as of the end of January 2021 from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (cell weighting). The sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
