[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The Blue House remained reserved regarding the public petition demanding severe punishment for the 'Dangjin Sisters Murder Case,' stating that "the trial is currently underway."
On the 19th, the Blue House stated in response to the public petition, "Regarding the strict punishment of the perpetrator requested by the petitioner, since the trial is currently in progress, we ask for your understanding that it is difficult to provide an answer through the public petition."
This petition is related to the sisters' murder case that occurred in Dangjin in June 2020, where the perpetrator is currently claiming diminished responsibility. The petition has garnered the support of 260,545 citizens.
The Blue House explained, "In 2018, the National Assembly amended Article 10, Paragraph 2 of the Criminal Act to abolish the 'mandatory reduction clause for diminished responsibility' and changed the reduction of sentence to a discretionary clause under the judge's authority. Since then, courts have been adopting a stricter stance on sentence reductions due to diminished responsibility."
