[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongwook Park] On the 18th, Pohang City appointed top advisory committee members in three future growth engines?battery, bio, and artificial intelligence (AI)?to diversify its steel-centric industrial structure.
For the battery sector, Lee Jae-hoon, CEO of Ice Square Ventures Co., Ltd. and former director of Gyeongbuk Technopark, was appointed. In the bio sector, Jang Seung-gi, head of the Biotechnology Research Center at POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology), and in the AI sector, Seo Young-joo, dean of the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence at POSTECH, were appointed respectively.
Pohang City is focusing on securing a leading position in three new growth industries?battery, bio, and artificial intelligence?amid a major transformation of rapid growth, based on key infrastructures such as the next-generation battery regulatory free zone, the small but strong research and development zone, and the venture valley.
The appointed top advisory committee members will play a role in actively supporting Pohang’s future industrial development by proposing and advising on major policies to revitalize each industry, building human networks related to each industry, and promoting corporate attraction through expert opinions.
At the appointment ceremony, Mayor Kang-deok Lee of Pohang said, “I ask the committee members, who are the best experts, to take on the mission of being ‘commanders’ and provide advice, criticism, and direction in each field.” He emphasized, “We will proactively respond to rapidly changing new industries to ensure we can be the best in each sector.”
Meanwhile, Pohang City has set this year as the first year of an economic transformation centered on new growth industries and is focusing on creating a battery industry ecosystem, including building a comprehensive secondary battery management center centered on the next-generation battery regulatory free zone.
