"Valentine's Day and New Semester Preparations" ... Department Stores Expand Online Discount Events

Expecting Increased Shopping Demand After Short Holiday... Special Online Mall Event Aligned with Contactless Trend

"Valentine's Day and New Semester Preparations" ... Department Stores Expand Online Discount Events

[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] Major department stores are vying to capture shopping demand immediately after the holiday season. This year, large-scale discount events have been organized online to align with the non-face-to-face (untact) shopping trend caused by COVID-19.

According to the distribution industry on the 13th, the period immediately following the holiday season is usually when demand increases as people spend holiday bonuses and gift certificates they received or buy gifts for family members who worked hard preparing for the holidays.

In the case of Shinsegae Department Store, sales in the week following last year's Chuseok holiday increased by 22.3% compared to the same period in 2019, and sales at Shinsegae Mall within SSG.com also rose by 35.6%.

With the spread of COVID-19 and strengthened social distancing measures this year, more customers are expected to shop online rather than at department store locations. Since the last day of the holiday coincides with Valentine's Day, and it is a period to browse spring new products and prepare for the new school term, sales in cosmetics, fashion, and children's categories are expected to perform strongly.

Lotte Department Store is holding the "Seol Benefits Badaso" event until the 14th on Lotte On, the group's integrated shopping mall, offering free shipping vouchers and overlapping discount coupons of 8%, 10%, and 12% to customers purchasing department store products. Customers buying from over 80 luxury cosmetics brands will receive up to 15% discount coupons plus additional discount coupons of 10-15% depending on the purchase amount.

Hyundai Department Store is also running an event until the 14th on its online mall The Hyundai.com, giving customers who purchase through "Store Pick" up to 10% more "The Money" points. Store Pick is a service that allows customers to pick up items purchased on The Hyundai.com at offline stores.

During the "Valentine's Day Special Exhibition," cosmetics, clothing, and accessories are sold at 5-20% off the original price, and during the "New Semester Essential Items Exhibition," popular products such as shoes and bags are sold at up to 20% discount.

Shinsegae Department Store is holding an exclusive "SSG X COACH" special sale until the 21st, offering up to 50% off on exclusive sale items and limited quantity products. At Shinsegae Department Store's Gangnam and Centum City branches, an exclusive "Lacoste Special Exhibition" is held through SSG.com, providing up to 30% discount along with an additional 15% online-only discount coupon. Popular brand products such as Daks Kids, Nepa Kids, and Adidas Kids are also offered at up to 40% discounted prices.

Kim Young-seop, Head of Merchandise at Shinsegae Department Store, said, "We have prepared a practical SSG.com event to meet the rapidly increasing shopping demand after the holidays and the untact trend," adding, "We will continue to present diverse events to satisfy the increasingly varied tastes of customers."
