"Apple Car Prefers Subcontracting Over Partnership... Limited Options Expected"

[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] There is a forecast that Apple, which is pushing forward the development of the autonomous electric vehicle 'Apple Car,' will not have many automobile manufacturers to collaborate with.

On the 8th (local time) in the United States, CNN reported that Damian Flowers, an analyst at Germany's Commerzbank, said, "Apple will not want to share anything (with automobile manufacturing partners)," adding, "What automobile manufacturers can gain from Apple is production volume."

Regarding new collaboration partners for the Apple Car, global major automobile manufacturers such as Ford, GM, Tesla, Honda, Nissan, and Stellantis have been mentioned, but it is expected that none of them will be able to establish a cooperative system with Apple.

He analyzed that the key issue is whether Apple will share core software technologies such as 5G networks and cloud computing with automobile companies.

Analyst Flowers said, "Apple may not be inclined to share technology," and "In that case, automobile manufacturers would be in a situation similar to Apple's contract manufacturers 'Foxconn' or 'Pegatron.'"

He added, "I don't think Volkswagen would agree to become a subcontractor for a big tech company," and said that major automobile companies would prefer to develop their own autonomous driving software.

J?rgen Pfieffer, an analyst at Germany's Metzler Bank, also said, "Automobile companies would lose more by cooperating with Apple," and "Major automobile companies do not want to open the door to Apple."

Earlier, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia stated in a clarification disclosure on the 8th that although they have received requests for joint development cooperation related to autonomous electric vehicles from multiple companies, it is still in the early stages and no decisions have been made, and they are not conducting discussions with Apple regarding autonomous vehicle development.
