[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Moon Seok-jin) recently held an online New Year's meeting to reflect on the 200-day process of expanding resident autonomy committees to all neighborhoods and to reaffirm their commitment to activities in the new year.

The "Seodaemun Resident Autonomy Committee New Year's Meeting" was conducted as a non-face-to-face interactive communication event centered at the Seodaemun-gu Social Economy Village Autonomy Center (43 Susaek-ro), using dual live broadcasts via Zoom and YouTube to comply with social distancing measures.

About 150 pre-registered participants joined via Zoom along with Mayor Moon Seok-jin of Seodaemun-gu, and approximately 800 people, including members of neighborhood resident autonomy committees and public-private cooperation councils, participated through YouTube.

The online New Year's meeting lasted about 90 minutes, starting with the mayor's greeting, followed by ▲The 200-day struggle to expand resident autonomy committees to all neighborhoods ▲2021 resident autonomy committee activity plans ▲Communicating with the resident autonomy committee on-site (real-time Q&A) ▲Resident Autonomy Committee 700 People, 700 Days Challenge (pledges and role commitments) ▲Reading of the Seodaemun Resident Autonomy Committee vision.

In particular, during the "Resident Autonomy Committee 700 People, 700 Days Challenge" segment, pledges for future activities over the 700-day term of neighborhood resident autonomy committee members, encouragement from participating members, and Seodaemun-gu's commitment as a public-private cooperation partner supporting the resident autonomy committees combined to add significance to the New Year's meeting.

At this time, Mayor Moon Seok-jin stated, "We will create a new model of local government through the revitalization of resident autonomy committees."

During the Q&A session with the mayor titled "Communicating with the Resident Autonomy Committee On-site," many residents offered diverse opinions on discovering local issues, support from the district for resident autonomy committee projects, and cooperation methods with the district council.

Shin Jeong-soon, a member of the Yeonhui-dong Resident Autonomy Committee, also expressed opinions on the role of resident autonomy committees for online marginalized groups and policy support measures from the district.

Mayor Moon Seok-jin said, "We will actively support resident autonomy committees to become genuine resident representative organizations, achieve public-private cooperation, and collaborate with the district council."

Meanwhile, Seodaemun-gu has been conducting a Seoul-type resident autonomy committee pilot project in five neighborhoods since 2018, and based on the achievements and experiences so far, completed the expansion and formation of resident autonomy committees in all 14 neighborhoods last December.
