Suncheon-style Ssireum Introducing Technical Scoring System, Accelerating Spread as Community Sports

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City (Mayor Heo Seok) announced on the 5th that it is stepping up efforts to recruit Ssireum teams in 24 eup, myeon, and dong districts to spread Suncheon-style Ssireum, a new audience-centered competition format that introduced a technical scoring system in Ssireum, as a popular recreational sport for all citizens.

The Ssireum classes, operated for the 24 eup, myeon, and dong Ssireum teams, will run for eight months from May to December. The classes will include demonstrations of basic Ssireum techniques by instructors, understanding of Ssireum game rules, practice of various techniques, and injury prevention education.

The eup, myeon, and dong Ssireum teams will compete in a league starting in August, with the top one and two teams from each group advancing to the quarterfinals. These teams will earn the right to participate in the Suncheon-style Ssireum competition on Citizens' Day, October 15.

Suncheon City plans to make the Suncheon-style Ssireum King selection contest a festival where citizens can fully enjoy the excitement, fun, and thrilling appeal of Suncheon-style Ssireum.

Applications for the eup, myeon, and dong Ssireum teams are open until April 30, and any Suncheon citizen interested in Ssireum can apply at their local eup, myeon, or dong administrative welfare center.

A Suncheon City official said, “Together with the Suncheon City Sports Council and the Suncheon Ssireum Association, we will widely promote Suncheon-style Ssireum to citizens to enhance their basic physical fitness and continuously strive to create a space where citizens communicate and unite through sports.”
