Perth, Australia, Lifts COVID-19 Lockdown Restrictions

[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] Australia has lifted the COVID-19 lockdown measures in the western metropolitan area of Perth. Perth, the fourth most populous city in Australia, imposed a lockdown on the entire city after one confirmed case was reported on the 1st.

Mark McGowan, Premier of Western Australia, announced that the lockdown measures in Perth, the capital of Western Australia with a population of about 2 million, and the southwestern region will be lifted at 6 p.m. on the 5th (local time).

At a press conference, Premier McGowan said, "I am very relieved to have reached this point," and added, "We can now confidently fully reopen the Perth economy."

Earlier, on the 1st, Perth authorities decided to impose a lockdown on the entire city after a security guard at a hotel quarantine facility tested positive.

Accordingly, in Perth, with a population of 2 million, movement was prohibited except for essential workers, hospital visitors, exercise, and grocery shopping.

There had been no confirmed cases in Perth for the past 10 months. The confirmed case this time tested positive on the 30th of last month.

According to the international statistics site Worldometer, Australia's cumulative number of COVID-19 cases is 28,842, with 909 deaths to date.
