[Yeonggwang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jeonseong] Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim Junsung) announced on the 5th that, in accordance with the revision of the Animal Protection Act, it will enforce mandatory liability insurance subscription for owners of dangerous dogs starting from the 12th.
The breeds subject to dangerous dog insurance subscription include five types specified in the Animal Protection Act: Dosa dogs, American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Rottweilers, and their mixed breeds.
Violations of the insurance subscription obligation will result in fines of 1 million KRW for the first offense, 2 million KRW for the second, and 3 million KRW for the third offense.
The insurance subscription procedure requires first completing animal registration and dangerous dog owner education, then contacting an insurance company for consultation before subscribing to the insurance.
The dangerous dog insurance products began launching with Hana Insurance on the 25th of last month, followed by NH Nonghyup Insurance, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, Lotte Insurance, DB Insurance, and KB Insurance scheduled to release their products.
The subscription cost ranges from 13,000 KRW to 15,000 KRW annually to minimize the burden on dangerous dog owners, with compensation amounts of 80 million KRW per person for death or permanent disability, 15 million KRW per person for injury, and at least 2 million KRW per case for injury to other animals.
A county official stated, “We urge dangerous dog owners to be sure to subscribe to the insurance by the 12th, when the subscription becomes mandatory, to avoid any disadvantages,” and added, “Preventive management to block accidents, such as the use of leashes and muzzles by dangerous dog owners, is the top priority, so we ask owners to be thorough in managing their dogs.”
