[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Gyeonggi Bucheon City announced that, according to the revised 'Animal Protection Act,' owners of dangerous dogs must mandatorily enroll in dangerous dog liability insurance starting from the 12th.

Violations of the enrollment obligation will result in fines of 1 million KRW for the first offense, 2 million KRW for the second, and 3 million KRW for the third.

The dangerous dog insurance compensates for death, permanent disability, injury to others caused by dangerous dogs, and damage to animals. The target dogs include Dosa dogs, American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Rottweilers, and their mixed breeds.

Starting from the 25th of last month with Hana Insurance's dangerous dog insurance product, multiple insurance companies plan to sequentially sell related insurance products. The enrollment cost is minimized for dangerous dog owners at about 15,000 KRW per dog annually (1,250 KRW per month).

The compensation amounts are ▲ 80 million KRW per victim in case of death or permanent disability ▲ 15 million KRW per victim in case of injury ▲ at least 2 million KRW per accident in case of injury to animals.

The compensation level is similar to other mandatory insurances such as gas accident liability insurance and elevator facility ownership liability insurance, and is designed to cover actual damages considering average treatment costs.

A Bucheon City official stated, "With the mandatory insurance enrollment, a minimum system has been established to allow victims of death or injury caused by dangerous dogs to quickly receive compensation," and added, "We will actively promote this until the mandatory enrollment date on the 12th."
