[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Ju-hyung] A public petition has been raised demanding punishment for a teacher who put harmful substances in kindergarten students' meals.

On the 27th, a petition titled "Request for dismissal and strong punishment of the special class teacher who fed harmful substances to children at a public kindergarten in Geumcheon-gu" was posted on the Blue House's public petition board.

The petitioner, who identified themselves as a parent of a child attending the kindergarten where the incident occurred, explained, "In November last year, a bizarre incident occurred where a special class teacher working at the kindergarten put harmful substances not only in the meals but also in the water and snacks consumed by the children," adding, "So far, a total of 17 children have been identified as victims."

They continued, "These children are only 5, 6, and 7 years old, very small and young beings who have just taken their first steps into the world," and criticized, "The perpetrator is a teacher affiliated with the education office, who has the duty to protect children, yet committed the crime without any remorse and is desperately trying to evade the law."

Furthermore, they expressed anger, saying, "Even though the crime was clearly recorded on closed-circuit television (CCTV), the perpetrator denies all charges," and "They shamelessly formed a legal defense team and are applying to cancel their suspension from the teaching position at a time when the case has not even been sent to the prosecution."

According to the petitioner, the children who ate the meals simultaneously experienced headaches, stomachaches, vomiting, and allergic reactions. The petitioner added, "There were children who had nosebleeds for over 20 minutes, children who were so dizzy they could barely sit up while bleeding from the nose, and they complained of abnormal symptoms they had never experienced in their lives." As of 8 p.m. on the 28th, the petition had garnered nearly 10,000 supporters.

Meanwhile, the incident occurred in November last year. According to an MBC 'News Desk' report at the time, teacher A was arrested by the police on suspicion of putting an unidentified liquid into the meals of 11 six-year-old children in a special class at a public kindergarten in Geumcheon-gu, Seoul.

Parents and others reviewed CCTV footage capturing the act and reported teacher A to the police. It was also investigated that teacher A sprayed the liquid on the meals of other teachers.

The police requested the National Forensic Service to analyze the contents of eight medicine bottles suspected to contain the liquid teacher A put in the children's meals, and the results showed that the substance included ingredients found in mosquito repellents and cosmetics.

However, teacher A claimed to the police that "the liquid was just plain water." Regarding the reason for spraying the substance on the food, A stated, "I did it because I was psychologically distressed."

Meanwhile, the Seoul Southern Education Support Office has suspended teacher A from their teaching position.
