Hyundai Motor Company·Kia - Korea Transportation Safety Authority, 'MOU for Joint Development of Next-Generation DTG'

[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Hyundai Motor Company and Kia announced on the 28th that they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Korea Transportation Safety Authority to jointly develop the next-generation DTG (Digital Tachograph).

The DTG is a device that automatically records vehicle operation data such as speed, RPM, brake status, location via GPS, azimuth, acceleration, driving distance, and traffic accident situations.

Hyundai Motor Company, Kia, and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority plan to jointly develop and expand the distribution of the next-generation DTG with enhanced functions and usability through this MOU. This will improve the submission rate of operation records for vehicles required to install DTG and conduct joint research utilizing the collected big traffic data.

Hyundai Motor Company and Kia will be responsible for developing the next-generation DTG and additional services using big traffic data, while the Korea Transportation Safety Authority will support the expansion of DTG infrastructure by establishing device standardization and revising DTG-related regulations.

The next-generation DTG, jointly developed by Hyundai Motor Company, Kia, and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, will be equipped with a communication module that automatically submits the collected operation records to the Korea Transportation Safety Authority server. This eliminates the need for manual extraction via SD cards or USB devices, which is expected to increase the collection rate of operation records as the next-generation DTG is widely distributed.

Furthermore, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia plan to actively support various businesses in developing services based on big traffic data for customers by utilizing the analysis results of big traffic data together with the Korea Transportation Safety Authority.

A Hyundai Motor Company and Kia official stated, “We will continue to promote cooperation with various businesses such as financial companies and logistics solution providers based on our mobility platform capabilities. We will continuously strive to enhance the value of mobility solutions provided by Hyundai Motor Company and Kia.”

Meanwhile, the MOU signing ceremony held at the Korea Transportation Safety Authority conference room (Seocho-gu, Seoul) was attended by officials including Kwon Oryung, Head of Mobility Platform Business Division at Hyundai Motor Company and Kia, and Cho Kyungsoo, Director of the Traffic Safety Headquarters at the Korea Transportation Safety Authority.
