Former Assemblyman Geum Jeon "Running as Independent is a Difficult Path... Will Cause a Rift"
Declared Candidacy at a Theater Closed Due to COVID-19
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] Former Democratic Party lawmaker Geum Tae-seop announces his candidacy for the Seoul mayoral by-election.
In a phone interview with Asia Economy on the same day, former lawmaker Geum said, "I am running to check the ruling party's unilateral dominance," adding, "The public will not want an election where old politicians are re-evaluated." He continued, "I will respond to the public's desire for new figures and a reasonable direction."
The official candidacy announcement is scheduled for the 31st at Prism Hall in Mapo-gu, Seoul. This place symbolizes the Hongdae indie music scene but is currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It appears to be a candidacy announcement focusing on support for self-employed and small business owners. Former lawmaker Geum left the Democratic Party last October and will run as an independent. He said, "It is a difficult path. I plan to create a platform that cracks the existing forces divided into two extremes and gathers new forces."
